World Cup: Egypt beat Australia on penalties to reach Round of 16

Egypt reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history after a penalty shootout win against Australia in Arlington, Texas.

Emam Ashour headed in Karim Hafez’s cross to give Egypt an early lead.

But Australia equalised in the second half thanks to an own goal from Mohamed Hany.

The match went to penalties and the Pharaohs came out victorious after Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington wasted their spot kicks.

The seven-time African champions will now travel to Atlanta to face the winner of Argentina and Cape Verde.
